AAR - Green Ops Advanced Application of Pistol Fundamentals (Virginia)

I’ve taken five formal pistol training classes and this was easily the most impactful one for improving my accuracy and performance. The word fundamentals in the title might sound basic, but mastering them is anything but easy and this course will challenge shooters at every level. Full AAR follows in the posts below.

My Experience
The course title includes the word fundamentals, but do not let that fool you. There is nothing easy about mastering the fundamentals. Regardless of your shooting level, you will be challenged throughout the course. The instruction focuses on refining the small details that determine whether rounds land exactly where you want them.

One of the most valuable parts of the course was a drill designed to isolate trigger control. We fired the pistol one handed while only holding the gun with the webbing between the thumb and index finger. At first it feels completely wrong and you assume the gun is going to fly out of your hand. Once I got past that hesitation and actually tried the drill, the lesson became clear. You would expect accuracy to decrease with less contact on the pistol, but the opposite happened. My accuracy improved. The instructors made a great point about how many unnecessary inputs we introduce into the gun when shooting. Poor trigger manipulation, tension, and inconsistent grip pressure all hurt accuracy. Removing those inputs makes the importance of clean trigger control immediately obvious. Combined with the instruction on proper grip, this drill alone noticeably improved my accuracy.

The portion of the instruction focused on grip was also a complete game changer for me, especially when running a red dot. Once my grip was corrected, my ability to track the dot during recoil improved dramatically and follow up shots became much more controlled. Built in competitions throughout the day were another excellent component of the course. These friendly competitions forced me to apply the fundamentals under a small amount of pressure and reinforced the practical application of the techniques that were taught. The class struck a great balance between deliberate instruction and real world application.

Instructors
Regardless of how strong a curriculum may be, if the instructors can't connect with the class and adapt to different learning styles the course will fall flat. Fortunately the Green Ops instructors are outstanding teachers and shooters who clearly practice what they preach. The pace of the class was perfect. There was plenty of time to load magazines, prep gear, and mentally process the instruction between drills without the class ever feeling rushed.

#1 Takeaway
Confidence...Specifically the confidence that I can put a bullet exactly where it needs to go, on demand. Before this class I never would have believed that a 25 yard shot could feel "easy". After shooting targets at 50 yards and even pushing close to 100 yards, my perspective completely changed.

Suggested Improvements
It's always difficult to come up with feedback after having such a great experience. I was finally able to think of a couple of things that would make the course even better.

- Implement a short zeroing clinic to discuss different pistol zeros and confirm impacts. I think this would do two things:
(1) Shooters would know they are only limited by their skill rather than by an inaccurate zero
(2) See the real world impacts of 10, 12, 15, and 25 yard zeros at distance.

- Expand the block of instruction grip.
I think that block could be even longer since achieving a proper grip can vary significantly depending on hand size, mobility, and pistol configuration.

Final Thoughts
If you shoot a handgun and want to improve, take this class. In my experience this was the most valuable pistol training I have received and it is the course I would recommend to anyone serious about improving their handgun skills. Green Ops has courses in VA and TX.
